Background of the study
In legal settings, accurate interpretation is crucial to ensure justice and fairness. Hausa, widely spoken in Northern Nigeria, is often used in courtrooms where legal proceedings rely on interpreters to bridge language barriers. Professional standards in interpreting—such as rigorous training, adherence to ethical codes, and regular performance evaluations—are vital to maintain accuracy and reliability in legal contexts (Abdullahi, 2023). However, disparities in adherence to these standards can lead to misinterpretations of legal terminology, ultimately affecting case outcomes. This study investigates how professional standards influence the quality of Hausa language interpreting services in legal settings. By examining interpreter training programs, reviewing case studies, and collecting feedback from legal professionals, the research seeks to assess the current state of interpreter performance and identify gaps that may undermine legal justice. The study also explores the role of continuous professional development and standardized evaluation criteria in improving interpretation quality within the legal framework.
Statement of the problem
Despite the existence of professional standards, Hausa language interpreting in legal settings often experiences accuracy issues, leading to potential misinterpretation of legal terms and procedures (Abdullahi, 2023). Variability in training quality and inconsistent application of ethical guidelines contribute to discrepancies that may compromise legal fairness. This study aims to pinpoint the challenges within current professional standards and assess their impact on interpreter performance, with the goal of proposing improvements to enhance service reliability in legal contexts.
